We’ve been in California (specifically, Yosemite area) for a week now (and will be here all month) after wrapping up our 6 weeks of work in Alaska at the end of August and driving via Canada, again, back down into the lower 48.
We were bittersweet about leaving the Land of the Midnight Sun. It has always been Justin’s favorite state and while I’m still not sure I’m ready to commit to it being #1 in my heart, Alaska ranks up there. I mean, who wouldn’t love a place where you’ll find more small aircraft than working cars in some communities, electric fences around tents and fresh rabbit meat for sale.
As I did in Wyoming, I wanted to give some stats about our time there!
36 days
26 events
5,600 miles to get to Denali National Park & all the miles around Alaska
74.1 miles hiked
9 different locations we slept
12 nights in a tent
29 nights in a bed (yes, yes, we were clearly spoiled in Alaska, although some of these “inside accommodations” did not have running water – par for the course in AK).
29 nights of rain (thank goodness 15 of these nights were inside)
16 showers (again, clearly spoiled)
5 loads of laundry
6 times we completely unloaded the car
2 car washes (***we needed many more, but AK is such that 10 minutes after you wash your car, it is dirty again)
8 blocks of ice for our cooler
5 sightings of Denali National Park’s colossal centerpiece … Denali
9 grizzly bear in Denali National Park (plus 30 more in Katmai National Park)
30+ moose sightings (we basically lost count)
7 bald eagle sightings
8 caribou sightings
6 ptarmigan sightings
3 owl sightings
2 dall sheep sightings
Personal Trash Created: 8.2 lbs (5.4 lbs in WY over 26 days)
Recycling Created: 9.2 lbs (3.7 lbs in WY)
Food Waste for Compost Created: 6.7 lbs (2.2 lbs in WY)
$0.37 found on the ground
43 games of Monopoly Deal played (***I would like to point out that these games take all of 15 min to play since 43 seems like a freakin lot. We usually play them during our meal times. It was fun when we got to share our love of games while visiting with Mac & Alex in Alaska!!)
9 Netflix movies
17 postcards sent
14 beers consumed
9 margaritas consumed
4 Bloody Marys consumed

I want that tent you had! What brand is it?
It’s The North Face Homestead Domey 3! Then there’s the Homestead Shelter that goes with it. We get a lot of comments about it!

Sounds awesome except for the rabbit meat part (for me, rabbits are friends, not food)!
That’s a lot of rain! Hopefully you are soaking up some sun now.
Alsaka is such a unique, rugged and beautiful state. I thank Justin for introducing it to me. I long to be back there someday with Rachel. Oh and by the way nice koozie!
Nice tally but you Better get drinking!
That tent looks amazing! So does Alaska. I hope I’ll get across the Atlantic and see it for myself one day.
