Last summer while we were working in Denali National Park for the Leave No Trace / Subaru Zero Landfill Initiative, Joe Lamp’l from Growing a Greener World asked us to part of his show and the premiere of Season 10 Episode 1 happened this month!
To give background, Growing a Greener World airs on PBS with a focus on organic gardening, green living and inspirational people making a positive impact on the plant. Clearly Subaru’s initiative to make 3 pilot National Parks become zero landfill falls in line with this subject matter.
At the time of filming last summer (July 26), we spent the whole day with Joe, his videographer Carl and the Subaru team in and out of the park. We really didn’t know how much we’d be featured in the episode because they filmed SEVERAL days of footage with so many other people and places, but we were surprised to end up in 1 minute and 39 seconds of the episode!
It makes sense to talk about the Zero Landfill Initiative from the breathtaking and unspoiled Alaskan landscape. All 3 parks have made great strides toward zero landfill, and Denali decreased its waste diversion rate from 15% in 2015 to 30% in 2018. Simple changes, like installing bear-proof recycling bins with standardized labeling and water-refilling stations (we used to call those water fountains) have led to big impacts! Aramark, the concessionaire that provides the bus tours to see inside Denali, gives out water in aluminum bottles (versus plastic–although you can always bring your own!!) and everything in the lunch box is recyclable or compostable.
If you don’t have 25 minutes to watch the entire episode—although I will proudly say it is fantastic—then you can watch our highlights reel. We appear at 6:19, 7:41, 9:15 and 21:53.
Just another cool project we’ve gotten to be involved with! #dontfeedthelandfills

So cool! I’ve been wondering when your episode was going to air. I’ll watch and then share with everyone.
oh and seeing Denali photos is making me have a major itch to go back ASAP!
